On Saturday, the employees and I went picking for both blackberries and blueberries at the local field. ‘Tis the season, and I’m so glad I didn’t miss it this year. I did, however, forget to take my camera, so alas, you’ll just have to do with my notes.

We brought our own buckets, and I challenged both kids to walk as far as they could on our way to the back of the field. N.Lo made it about halfway, which was impressive. K.Lo got right down to business, which was also impressive. We began with the blueberries, and it did take a few lessons on which were the correct ones to pick, and ultimately K.Lo’s haul was half green, but hey. She’s three. I was more intrigued by her picking style, which was intensive. Surprisingly quiet and steadfast as she moved from blueberry bush to blueberry bush. The pickings were pretty slim in general, and I overheard one of the guides mention that they had started picking very early this year, and so we were probably coming in at the tail-end of the season. Meanwhile, N.Lo had his sights set on the buckets. He was no fool when it came to getting the most berries in his mouth with the least amount of work.

Moving on to the blackberries, K.Lo immediately got the hang of selecting the ripest berries. And N.Lo immediately got the hang of dipping his hand in the blackberry bucket. “He’s eating the all the blackberries!” his coworker reported. I advised that it was true, but there was probably little we could do to stop a 20-month-old at the all-you-can-eat buffet.

Meanwhile, two flocks of geese flew in perfect V-formations overhead. Both kids got a kick out of this new-to-their-eyes sight.

Our picking excursion came to a quick end when K.Lo required a trip to the Employee Rest Room, which turned out also to be her first venture into a Port-o-Potty. Excitement.

Also purchased: fresh corn on the cob, peaches, and Vidalia onions. Don’t asked me how we got everyone and everything to the company car… Immediately upon our return, both employees reported on their berry adventure to the CEO, who was, as K.Lo noted, “very ‘pressed with [them].”

I think you are a brave manager, Pen, for taking both employees by yourself! What did the farm employees think about N.Lo's face stuffage?! :)
