Facial expressions are of utmost importance when managing employees. Managers need to master The Look early on in their career to convey that they are stern, they are mean, and most importantly, they are not messing around. You will know you have mastered the look when the employee pokes out his or her lip, dissolves into tears, and finally stops whatever obnoxious behavior he or she had been engaged in. Obviously, it is to be used sparingly, for serious company code of conduct violations only.

Silly faces are also useful when disciplining employees, their function being twofold. One, they distract the employee from code of conduct violations, as the silly face is typically unexpected. And two, they dispel tension for both Management and employee. Management can blow off a little steam by showing how they really feel, and the employee, perhaps instead of crying, shrieking, and/or melting down, smiles or laughs instead. If you are really lucky, the employee will make the face back at Management, fully turning a previously bad situation on its head.

    You guys make me SMILE.

funny faces are a great skill to master to break the tension.

I agree with Andria. Funny faces, so funny!

I highly recommend stealing of the nose as a strategy as well. Putting said stolen nose on one of the canine staff has lead to peels of laughter at my office.
